Messages
Edit a message up to 15 minutes after sending, pull back a message you didn’t mean to send, or mark a message as unread so you can come back to it later. Shared with You is even better, because now you can access it in third-party apps. Start and manage shared projects in collaborative apps using Messages. Plus, SharePlay is coming to Messages so you can enjoy content in sync via Messages.
Use helpful features for managing email to schedule emails, unsend an email a few moments after sending it, compose beautiful emails with rich links that show previews of the content you’ve shared, and more. And with a smarter, faster search experience, you’ll see relevant results even if you make a typo and you can get results for synonyms, too.
iCloud Shared Photo Library
Share photos and videos seamlessly and even automatically with up to five other family members so everyone can collaborate on family photos and enjoy more complete memories. iCloud Shared Photo Library is a separate iCloud library where participants can contribute photos and videos. Content in the shared library appears in everyone’s Memories, Featured Photos, and the Photos widget, so you can relive all your family’s adventures.
Safari and passkeys
Share sites as you collaborate with friends in a shared Tab Group. And use passkeys, a next-generation credential that can’t be phished or leaked—and aims to replace passwords.
Weather
Weather comes to iPad, taking advantage of the larger display. Animations are more immersive, and you can tap into the modules to get more detailed information on air quality, local forecasts, and more. You can also opt in to severe weather notifications, so it’s easier to monitor and prepare for storms.
Live Text
Live Text now supports video, so you can grab useful information from a paused video frame. You can also lift the subject of an image away from the background, and copy and paste it in apps like Messages and Notes.
Stage Manager
Stage Manager automatically arranges your apps so you can easily multitask and switch between them. For the first time on iPad, you can resize and use multiple overlapping windows to create your ideal workspace. Stage Manager provides full external display support for resolutions up to 6K. Use different apps on iPad and your external display, and drag and drop content between them.
New display modes
A new Display Zoom setting increases the pixel density shown on your display, so you can view more in your apps. Reference Mode for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro with Liquid Retina XDR display provides multiple color reference presets for editing video and film content.
Gaming
Metal 3 enables next-generation iPad games with features like MetalFX Upscaling, so you get accelerated performance and stunning visuals. Check out what you and your friends are playing and achieving across games all in one place, in the redesigned Game Center dashboard. And games with Game Center multiplayer support can add support for SharePlay, so you and your friends can play together more easily.
Home
The Home app is completely reimagined with a design that makes it easier to view and control your smart home accessories at a glance. iPadOS 16 also adds support for the new Matter smart home connectivity standard, which will help bring the smart home experience to more people.
Family Sharing
It’s now easier to set up and manage accounts for kids. Once your child has an account, set up a device for them with just a few taps. And easily share your favorite Apple purchases and subscriptions so everyone gets personalized access to their favorite content.
Desktop-class apps
Productivity apps are more capable with new ways to interact. You get a consistent way to undo and redo actions, a redesigned find-and-replace experience, a new document menu, and customizable toolbars. In the Files app, change file extensions, view folder size, and more.
Accessibility
Get accessibility features like Live Captions for FaceTime video calls and any calls or content on your iPad, over 20 additional languages for VoiceOver and Spoken Content, spelling mode for Voice Control, and more.
